Everything You Need to Know Before Your First PYC Class

New to Power Yoga Canada? You’re in the right place.

Whether you’re trying hot yoga for the first time, wondering what to bring to class or looking for information about booking, heat, hydration and what to expect, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about practicing at Power Yoga Canada.

Our classes are designed to meet you where you are. Beginners are welcome, modifications are always available and you do not need to be flexible or experienced to start.

Find a PYC studio near you, explore the schedule and get ready to sweat, move, breathe and connect.

Is Power Yoga Canada beginner-friendly?

Yes. Power Yoga Canada classes are beginner-friendly, and you do not need any previous yoga experience to get started.

Your first few classes are about getting familiar with the poses, the heat and the rhythm of the PYC Flow. Move at your own pace, take breaks whenever you need them and remember that there is no expectation to do every pose.

With consistent practice, you can gradually develop greater strength, mobility, balance, body awareness and familiarity with the flow.

New yogis are always welcome at PYC.

What should I expect at my first hot yoga class?

Expect a dynamic, breath-led yoga practice in a heated studio where you’ll move, sweat and explore the practice at your own pace.

Arrive a little early so you have time to check in, meet your teacher and settle onto your mat. Let your teacher know it’s your first class so they can help you get comfortable with the space and the practice.

During class, listen to your body. You are always welcome to modify a pose, slow down or rest when you need to.

Most importantly, you don’t need to know what you’re doing before you arrive. That’s what your first class is for.

Do I need to book a Power Yoga Canada class in advance?

We recommend reserving your class in advance to help secure your spot.

Classes can be booked online through the PYC website or participating studio booking system. Availability, drop-in policies and booking procedures may vary by studio, so check your local PYC studio for details.

What happens if I book a class and can’t attend?

If you can no longer attend a class you reserved, cancel your booking as early as possible through the booking system.

Late cancellation and no-show policies may vary by PYC location and membership or pass type. Check the policies of your home studio for applicable cancellation windows and fees.

What should I wear to hot yoga?

Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and that you don’t mind sweating in.

Breathable, moisture-wicking athletic clothing works well for hot yoga. Yoga is generally practiced barefoot, so you won’t need shoes or socks during class.

Choose whatever makes you feel comfortable and able to move.

What should I bring to a hot yoga class?

Bring a yoga mat, water bottle and towel to your PYC hot yoga class.

Because you can expect to sweat, a yoga or mat towel can make your practice more comfortable. You may also want to bring a change of clothes and an additional towel if you plan to shower after class.

Mat, towel and other amenity availability varies by PYC studio, so check your location page before your visit.

Should I eat before hot yoga?

Most people find it more comfortable to practice hot yoga without a large meal immediately beforehand.

If you need something before class, consider a light snack that you know sits comfortably for you. Everyone is different, so pay attention to what helps you feel energized without feeling overly full during your practice.

How should I hydrate before hot yoga?

Arrive at hot yoga already well hydrated rather than trying to drink a large amount of water immediately before class.

You can bring water into the studio and take a drink whenever you need one. Because hot yoga involves considerable sweating, paying attention to hydration before and after your practice is important.

Listen to your body and take breaks whenever needed.

Do I need electrolytes after hot yoga?

Electrolytes can help replace minerals lost through sweat, particularly after a very sweaty hot yoga practice.

Water is an important part of rehydration, while electrolyte-containing foods and beverages can also help replenish fluids and minerals.

Your individual hydration needs will depend on factors such as how much you sweat, the length and intensity of your practice and your overall health.

How hot are Power Yoga Canada classes?

PYC hot yoga classes are practiced in a heated and humidified room, with temperatures typically around 37°C (98°F), depending on the class and studio.

If you are new to hot yoga, give yourself time to adjust to practicing in the heat. Move at your own pace, drink water when needed and take a resting pose or leave the heated room if you feel unwell.

Specific temperatures and conditions may vary by class and PYC studio.

Do I need to be flexible to do Power Yoga?

No. You do not need to be flexible to start yoga.

Flexibility is something you can explore through the practice, not a prerequisite for showing up.

PYC classes encourage you to work with the body you have today. Every pose can be approached differently, and modifications allow you to adapt the practice to your experience and ability.

If you can step onto a yoga mat, you can begin.

Can Power Yoga help build strength?

Power Yoga incorporates bodyweight movement, balance and dynamic yoga sequences that can help develop strength, stability, mobility and body awareness.

The PYC Flow combines breath and movement through poses and transitions that engage different areas of the body throughout class.

For students looking for an additional strength challenge, select PYC locations may also offer classes incorporating weights, resistance bands or other props.

Can Power Yoga help with weight loss?

Power Yoga is a form of physical activity that can contribute to an active lifestyle, but individual weight changes depend on many factors beyond yoga alone.

A consistent practice can support physical fitness while helping develop strength, mobility, balance and body awareness.

Rather than approaching the practice around a particular body size or number on a scale, PYC encourages you to discover how movement can help you feel stronger, more connected and more at home in your body.

How often should I practice yoga?

There is no single perfect number of yoga classes per week. Consistency matters more than trying to follow a rigid schedule.

For many students, practicing two or three times per week is a sustainable place to start. Others enjoy practicing more frequently and mixing dynamic Power Yoga classes with slower or restorative practices.

Choose a schedule that works with your body, goals and lifestyle. Rest and recovery are part of a sustainable practice too.

What makes Power Yoga Canada different?

Power Yoga Canada combines a dynamic, breath-led Power Yoga practice with a strong focus on connection, community and personal growth.

The signature PYC Flow is designed to challenge you while giving you space to explore the practice in your own way.

PYC is about more than completing poses. It’s about showing up, connecting to your breath and body, discovering what you’re capable of and being part of a community that practices together.

Since opening its first studio in 2009, PYC has grown into a community of studios, teachers and yogis connected through the practice.

What types of yoga classes does Power Yoga Canada offer?

PYC studios offer a variety of yoga and movement classes, with class offerings varying by location.

Depending on your studio, you may find Hot Power Yoga, music and unplugged Power Yoga classes, Deep Flow, strength-focused yoga, Pilates-inspired classes, restorative practices, Yin Yoga and other specialty classes.

Check your local PYC schedule to see the classes currently available near you.

Can I take hot yoga while pregnant?

Pregnancy and heated exercise require individualized medical guidance, so speak with your physician or qualified healthcare provider before participating in hot yoga while pregnant.

If you are pregnant, tell your yoga teacher before class and follow the recommendations of your healthcare provider. Certain poses and practices may need to be modified or avoided during pregnancy.

If hot yoga is not appropriate for you, some PYC studios may offer unheated or lower-intensity classes. Class availability varies by location.

Can I take breaks during a PYC class?

Absolutely. You are always welcome to slow down, modify a pose or take a break during class.

Your practice does not need to look like anyone else’s. Child’s Pose or another comfortable resting position is always available, and you should listen to your body throughout the practice.

If you feel dizzy, faint, unusually short of breath or otherwise unwell, stop exercising and leave the heated environment as needed.

Which Power Yoga Canada class should beginners start with?

Beginners can start with any PYC class identified as beginner-friendly or all levels.

If you’re completely new to yoga, choose the class that sounds most comfortable to you and let your teacher know that it’s your first time.

If your studio offers a Foundations, beginner or slower-flow class, that can also be a great way to become familiar with common poses and transitions before exploring other PYC classes.
